Age vs. ability
According to ABC7, experts suggest that age alone should not determine whether someone is fit to drive.
Dave Bruns, AARP Communications Manager in Florida, noted that it is unfair to assume age alone determines driving ability. Florida has a significant number of older drivers, including hundreds of thousands over the age of 80.
Florida license renewal requirements
Under Florida law, drivers must renew their license every eight years. Once a driver reaches the age of 80, renewal is required every six years and includes a vision test.
There have been discussions about adding further requirements, such as restrictions on nighttime driving or additional vehicle safety adaptations.
There’s a lot that can happen in six years, and drivers should be required to submit a vision test more frequently to ensure they remain safe on the road.
Evaluating driver fitness
The University of Florida and the University of Ontario developed an online screening tool to help assess at-risk drivers.
After completing the screening, drivers receive a classification and recommendations based on their risk level, helping guide next steps for safer driving.
